The King of New Jersey

Napoleon Bonaparte’s older brother Joseph was King of Naples and then King of Spain in Napoleonic Europe. After Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, Joseph escaped France and sailed to the US in exile while his younger brother served his exile on the island of Elba. Joseph settled in Burlington County, New Jersey – near Bordentown, 25 miles outside of Philadelphia. While never becoming a US citizen, the New Jersey legislature passed a statute allowing the King to own land in the state. On his land he built “Point Breeze” a European style estate. From 1816-1839 he lived as Count de Survilliers. His New Jersey neighbors called him Mr. Bonaparte.
